The Whole New Reality

Next week the STAR Team kicks off a new campaign for alternative transportation. I’ll have more specifics as we get close to the main event:

Who: Joe Kurmaskie, The Metal Cowboy

What: A public talk about bicycling

When: 19 April at 7:00 p.m.

Where: City Utilities Auditorium, 301 E. Central

Click here for the official flyer.

Our new bicycling booklet will also be ready. Bike Smart Springfield replaces the old Drive Less, Live More. Please note, the .pdf linked here does not represent the printed version. The printed version may have minor changes, including a different cover photo. There are no substantive differences between the new printed version and the .pdf.

So, where did that “1-Mile Solution” come from? Whoever came up with that one is clearly on the ball. 😉

    Joe Kurmaskie –

I saw Joe at Pro Walk/Pro Bike last year. He started off his presentation by saying that “everyone in the room was a broke democrat, like him” and then going on about George W Bush, Dick Cheney, etc.

It was as if Keith Olbermann had taken the stage, only with even less political common sense. It was very partisan and frankly, just kind of dumb.

I found it very upsetting because I’m sure there are people there who consider themselves republicans or at least bi-partisan. If there were any Republican mayors there, etc, Joe made it known that they were not welcome.

I’m not sure what possessed him to do that, and I certainly hope he will not do that in Springfield or you will have no chance at instituting any of the things that you hope to accomplish there.

I have no personal beef with Joe. I don’t know him nor have I read any of his books. I do know that it was not my idea of bike advocacy and I’m glad it wasn’t me he was introducing.

He was introducing Mia Burke from Alta Planning.

Robert… Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll pass along your comment.

In other news, I’m still planning to comment on that video. It may have to wait until next week.
