Our newest film, “Witness At Tornillo,” will be featured in two international film festivals this summer!

Everyone here at Carbon Trace is elated to see our film accepted into both the Barcelona International Short Film & Video Festival 2020 and the Kansas City Filmfest International. As the saying goes, “It’s an honor just to be nominated”—but honestly—we are hoping for a win!

Thanks to all the donors who supported our work with this important film! This would not be happening without you, and you are appreciated.

Of course, you won’t see us sashaying down the red carpet for a while because both of these events are postponed due to COVID-19. We think that is the right call, of course. We are currently reassessing many of our practices to reflect the current health crisis, as we work closely with many underserved populations who are particularly vulnerable to this threat.

We have several films coming out soon(see above), as well as plenty of other content you may have missed out on. Getting lots of eyes on our company is a MUST for Carbon Trace Productions to continue for years to come. Individual donors and media work for other not-for-profits make up our current budget. We are applying for grants, seeking other private funding mechanisms, and continuing to reach out to Springfield’s not-for-profit community promotional opportunities.

What’s Happening Now at Carbon Trace Productions

Our final trip to the border was scheduled for mid-March, but COVID-19 waylaid that plan. This documentary highlights the grassroots humanitarian organizations working to keep asylum-seeking families safe in a desperate situation. The recent ruling by the Supreme Court that the Migrant Protection Protocols, better known as the “Remain in Mexico” policy, may continue as lawsuits work through federal courts was a significant letdown for folks protesting near the border and asylum-seekers near Matamoros. We have to wait until the COVID-19 crisis ends, but we are committed to finishing this film. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for an update video with footage from our January trip.

Our award-winning editor Mariah Zenk is using footage from our trip to Jordan to show the scale of the Syrian refugee crisis in Jordan, which has created a lost generation of children. This film will incorporate our interviews about the toll on families who have been displaced and are emotionally distraught by this crisis, endangering the future of the country as a whole. What will happen to these children who have only lived during wartime? More to come on this next month.

We are thrilled to report that a very talented editor, Austin Wood, has joined the Carbon Trace volunteer team to bring this project across the finish line. Our Patreon Docubuff supporters will be the first to see! The Carbon Trace creative board will review the film in early April and we’ll make a draft version available to our much-appreciated supporters immediately afterward. We can’t wait to get your feedback!

In the era of COVID-19, what’s safer than a movie theater and less isolating than Netflix on your couch? Hint: It’s the subject of Carbon Trace’s student-led film, which will be completed by May! Producer Marlena McReynolds says American Drive-In will show that this way of movie-going, which has been a staple for generations, isn’t on its way out. The joys of the drive-in theater resonate with younger generations, and drive-in operators are introducing innovations that may surprise you. Stay tuned!

We are so excited about this project, which highlights the important work being done here in Springfield to transform the lives of individuals who have experienced chronic homelessness. The human stories we are capturing need to be told and we are privileged to be able to tell them. For everyone’s safety, filming has been suspended until the health crisis passes. But Director Andy Cline (aka Carbon Trace President) and a crew of enthusiastic students are using this time to work with the footage that has already been filmed

Our student-run project has its very own Facebook page—Songs from the Street, where you can check out this great teaser! We are incredibly proud of the young crew taking on such a serious topic: how homeless individuals come together to form a choir that inspires the audiences privileged to see them perform. The choir has suspended practices during the health crisis. But we’ll be back, capturing the choir’s rehearsals, performances, and so much more, as soon as we can. This is a film you don’t want to miss!

Carbon Trace’s work on Songs of the Street and Eden Village (Working Title) has introduced us to some of Springfield’s most important leaders. Check out this video by Andy Cline to see one of them in action.
